I've seen a million movies. Many of them belonging to the much hyped and ridiculed, yet significant and revered home of hindi movies - bollywood.
Mumbai is the heart of bollywood. As simple as that. While it may often flex the muscle of Indian small towns or use a botox shot of a Switzerland locale, bollywood is Mumbai.
And today, Mumbai felt like bollywood to me.
I was out for the whole day - and in fact, now in retrospect, I unknowingly did everything to complete the experience. Travelled using the spine of Mumbai, the local train network, spent hours sitting in my formals, ate at a road side stall and even tried to catch a rickshaw in the rain, -twice- hoping against hope!
But these many different moments of the day really began to transform themselves to look more like flowing, planned scenes of a larger, more cinematic experience as we approached the end of the reel.
As the day wound down, a few hours after the sun had disappeared past the horizon, I found myself to be part of a wonderful little scene.
This, let me tell you, was the kind of moment so blissful, you would wonder whether the director of such a movie was really a romantic at heart or was making a spoof where things were meant to be too good to be true, just for the believers to be laughed at.
Have you ever had a main course so good, that you forget that you could have desserts too? I had just gotten done with the last hour of my 9 hour classes, I was about to spend some time with my girlfriend on my way home and when I got home, was going to relish the comforts of some good food, a loving family and a soft bed. Asking for more would not only be greedy but silly too!
But God, as we all know, is renowned for his use of the strangest methods and the curviest routes, isn't he? I was pretty satisfied, happy with what I was given at the moment. But just then.. A train ride which would have been a little stressful for my girl was dumped in favour of a rickshaw ride, which I find a little better myself too. The rain having only just recently slowed to a drizzle outside, we were lucky to get a rickshaw within minutes, an occurrence whose rarity and blessing could never be overstated, just ask any Mumbaikar you know. As we got into the rickshaw, we realised that one end of the seat, one-third rather, was wet. And so, we sat closer to each other than we would have otherwise. Sad, right? Ha, no!
And there began one of the most amazing half hours I've had in a long, long time. She lay her head on the right half of my chest, a few inches below my collar bone with her hand almost particularly poetically placed on my chest, almost symbolising the control she has over my heart. I put my arm across her neck then, with my palm, fingers and thumb gently rubbing the smoothness and softness of the skin on her right arm, below her shoulder. And as I did this, I felt a calm descend and set over me. The kind of peace that can only be symbolic of 2 of the simplest, yet most desired emotions that I know of. Bliss and satisfaction. First I thanked our Lord Almighty for his blessings, and then suddenly jumped up like we hit a bump and went "I love you! So much!" Yes, complete with the exclamations uncontrollably audible through my voice. But then again, I made no attempt to hide or subdue them either! But as I saw the look on her face just then, the bliss I was already experiencing was coated with some glee and sprinkled on with a generous helping of the warmest and truest kind of love. I felt my eyes well up and voluntarily slumped back into my seat so that she could rest her head on my chest again.
The most perfect rain and traffic on the outside under the suddenly perfect suitable golden glow of the otherwise depressing streetlights, love noiselessly buzzing around inside the rickshaw and warmth in each of us, for the other. If this wasn't one of The Director's finest, then - well, you could only be joking!
I've had teachers, my parents, other relatives and elders all tell me about how the destination isn't always what's important, but the journey is what truly matters. I was only trying to get home to some invaluable rest and good food via the rickshaw ride but even those amazing comforts of my destination were dwarfed here by the simplest journey that I will never forget. I understand now Mom and Dad... I do. :)

And it seemed quite an interesting request! So here I am.. Gettin my critique on!
I'm basically gonna give my opinion on B.o.B, XV, Kid Cudi, J. Cole, Drake, Asher Roth, Wale, Jay Electronica*, Blu* & Nipsey Hussle and sum the article up with a comparison..

I woulda loved to include Wiz Khalifa, Charles Hamilton, Ace Hood, Curren$y, Pill Diggy Simmons, etc. but it would be plain WRONG for me to do that, cuz I don't really listen to their music, as of now at least.

*[I was a bit hesitant to include Jay Elec and Blu in this group but I jus think yall need to be enlightened]

Now.. Let's go!

B.o.B

I'm gonna start of with Bobby Ray. Mainly cuz his music is fresh in my mind and my ears at the moment. I think he's a versati- Nah nah.. A VERY fu*king versatile musician. But as just a rapper I think he just isn't as good as some of the others in the bracket he's put in by us hip-hop fans.. His rhymeschemes at times get.. Too basic. Elementary almost. His content is cool tho.
I don't really see him as a punchline rapper so I don't expect that shit from him. I like how he uses his rhymes to express himself and delve into his own emotions and doesn't try to be someone he isn't.

I think his writing/rhyming style is actually better suited to a different genre, something simpler and more relaxed where less is expected in the technicalities of writing.. Maybe a genre to which he could become what Michal Jackson(RIP) became to pop?
But overall I think he's a musician more than a rapper but with a LOT of potential.. It would really be amazing to see him grow as a rapper too.
As a rapper : 6.75/10
Overall : 8.5/10

Asher Roth

When I liked dude's music initially I remember they would think I was mad.. But I was digging Ash's music right from the first few tracks I heard of his. I couldn't and still haven't been able to get my hands on the full greenhouse effect mixtape for some strange reason.. But Asleep In The Bread Aisle was an under-appreciated album and pretty good for a debut IMO.
The strides he's been taking over the last few months have been good too, his flow's gettin iller and he seems to be imprving his delivery as well.
Fu*k the em comparisons. Dude's flow is really, really good. Plus he has this ability to come up with the sickest of lines right outta the blue.. His rhymescheme and structuring of lyrics are quite unique and pretty malleable.. Rather fluid, infact.
I just wish he would come out with a little more material between his mixtapes/albums and talk a little more about things other than jus sex. Lol.
As a rapper : 7.5/10
Overall : 7/10

Nipsey Hussle

I honestly myself find it tough to accept I like his music. I don't really know why. His lyrics are pretty good for a gangsta rapper and even generally. His flow's pretty laidback and with the hairsyle as well I can't help but think of him as Snoop v2.0..
I like Hussle best when he's talking about the struggle tho, more than when he's talkin about making others struggle and when he's talking about taking bullets than riddling others with them.. His delivery when he's being brutally honest.. Or rather honest about brutalities seems to have this very genuine and raw feel which jus force the listener to sink into his world which he tends to be able to describe with the sharpness of an HDTV.

As a rapper : 7/10
Overall : 6.75/10

Jay Electronica

He really I think is in a league of his own.. But not just cuz of his talent. It's more about his style and the image that he portrays or the kinda person and/or rapper he is. While he is more than capable of killing other rappers when he wants to, I really respect and like his verses where he's doing a lil more than that. Now he's no Immortal Tech, nor is he Lord Buddha. But he just seems to be able to elevate hismelf and his rhymes to a higher plane than most of his contemporaries. But while he can be a good ol' mic/competition killa and part-intellectual.. He can be a dope story-teller, express emotions and portray difficulties and pleasures beautifully as well. His old-school flow is one I really dig too.. His rhymeschemes can be insane and his delivery is emphatic. Jay Elec hardly displays any flaws when he spits.. But I'd like to see him push himself to surpass his boundaries and try newer things..
As a rapper 7.75/10
Overall : 7/10

Blu

Blu.. Damn. Below The Heavens is one of hip-hop's best and most underrated/under-appreciated albums, EVER. Blu can really be diverse with his lyrics and touch on any topic he wishes to with utmost grace and elegance.. In a way which only he can do. Blu keeps it real and honest.. He's a believer in God and doesn't hide it.. He has a heart and doesn't hide it.. He's not really cool with the violence that's affected his city (LA) and doesn't hide that too.. He really is one of the realest.. Blu's rhymes can be vicious and elegant, smart and sexy, boastful and admirable all at the same time.. He's a smart person who seems to have his head firmly in the right place. Not to forget, he's a dope producer as well. I woulda hoped he blows up and gets mainstream success... But I think Blu and me are both smarter than that ;)
As a rapper : 8.5/10
Overall : 8.5/10

This dude can rap. Vizzy can really come with some of the sickest flows I've ever heard.. And at the same time be saying something smart. Not only does he sound good, he makes sense while sounding good. One of the main complaints I have about Vizzy is that he could pick better beats.. His producer Se7en has some serious talent, there's no doubt about it. But I just don't dig his beats much. Then again tho, this is probably jus a personal preference.. But in his latest '30 Minute Layover' mixtape, I heard him go in on tracks like Drop The World et al and he absolutely killed them. I would like to hear him do that.. Work on different kinds of beats. That's all. But I have hardly any complaints about XV as a rapper.. He's gonna blow up. Watch out.

B.o.B - Adventures Of Bobby Ray [ALBUM REVIEW]

I have a diverse taste in music.. I primarily love Rap and (Acoustic/Slow) Rock..

And B.o.B fell just short of making the perfect album for me.

My favourite love/rock song right now is from this album (Lovelier Than You) AND so is my favourite rap track at the moment (Airplanes II).

Ain't that sayin something?

T.I.'s verse on Bet I is really, really hot. T.I., Lupe and Eminem all deliver fire verses. Bruno Mars on the hook of Nothin On You does a good ass job too. Janelle Monae seems good on The Kids as well. Hayley Williams is outstanding on both the Airplanes tracks. Production is solid in almost all the tracks. The ones I didn't find too good are because of preference.. Nothing 'bad'.

I like the subject matter he's picked for the tracks.. Not purely serious, but at the same time, not jus fun and playful either. Good balance between everything.

But I also have to admit, when we talk about JUST his rapping, leaving everything else aside, B.o.B maybe doesnt come up as strong as some of his contemporaries (yes, I am referring to the likes of J. Cole and Drake). Wale seems to be stepping his game up too off late.. So that's one area maybe B.o.B could look into in the immediate future. Probably the main thing that held the album back from greater heights..

The length is good tho. Short n sweet.

I hate bringing this up as much as I love bringing it up but might as well address it since I want to..
I was really looking forward to Drake and Cole this year.. I guess I ended up under-estimating/over-looking Bobby Ray, even tho I've heard all his mixtapes.. I guess I'll put it this way.. B.o.B's the best upcoming musician, Drake's the best upcoming artist and Cole's the best upcoming rapper. Who also produces. Damn. Hip-Hop, I LOVE YOU!

But another thing I love is this album, and so will you if you have a slightly diverse taste in music.

I hope the music world is ready.. It's the takeover. 2010 belongs to hip-hop now.

And I hope Hip-Hop is ready.. MUSIC is back!

A SOLID DEBUT. AMAZING MUSICIAN. B.o.B's made himself one of my favourite artistes. Hope he keeps it up. Considering possible releases from Eminem, Drake, J. Cole, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and other heavyweights this year it may be tough but possibly one of the best albums of the year.. But then again I think it would be wrong to compare him to the above mentioned artistes' albums cuz his style is far from hardcore rap.. I dont know.

Hahah yeahhhh. THAS WASSAP MY DUDES!

Now I'm not gonna make the same mistake of finalising anythin cuz I realise anything can change! But one thing's for sure, all the tracks are gonna be my own verses on popular songs' beats.. To be honest, I think this mixtape will give you just a little more than a glimpse at what I'm truly capable of.

..my preliminary exams are going not-too-well. im not cut out for this bullshit. if i did belong to any educational stream, it would be arts/humanities.. but its looked down upon here in india. "arts is for the girls", "so son, what stream are you in? science? commerce?" like it's illegal for guys to fuckin study arts.. i love the english language.. and i love observing things.. in an ideal world i would major in psycho and english (jus before i sign my record deal in the usa, after my concert at madison square with jay-z,eminem,slaughterhouse,j.cole,xv,kanye west, et al in attendance)smh lol

Best Rappers (English):

Savage

Lyrically hot, great emotion in his voice and flows fucking well too! Just feel maybe he can work on diversifying his subject matter a bit..

Emcee Feral

Probably the hardest working rapper at Insignia.. Improved hella lot since Jan! Stilll shows some grammatical and pronunciation problems but has amazing flow.. Isn't afraid to experiment, and his expirements more often than not pay off. Makes beats too. Damn!

GD $ingh

One of the best rappers in Insignia for commercial tracks but has been improving his lyrics steadily too. Real good flow, delivery is solid and emotions are on point.

Best Textcees:

InfinitZ

Dominates matches. What Thierry Henry was at Arsenal at his peak, same was with InfinitZ.. He's so good and his arrogance makes defeating him seem almost impossible. Impenetrable almost.. Though HOD and Sarosh proved otherwise. Wordplays are amazing, multies are off the wall and basically.. Some crazy muthafucking punches.

Brassic Bhai

Been going at it for a minute now and he just does not seem to let up. I personally love his structure, simplicity in his punches and the concepts he picks.. Also a mentor to loads of budding rappers.

Sarosh

Emerged seemingly outta nowhere to wrestle matches out of the grasp of the likes of InfinitZ, HOD, etc. Staked his claim rather emphatically as one of THE Textcess to reckon with.

Mixtape Of The Year:

The D.E.S.I. Mixtape

An amazing effort put together by Undefined Power.. Filled with bangers in Hindi, Punjabi and English.. Really showcased and represented desi rap the way it should be.

Crew Of The Year:

F.B.I. - The Verbal Prophetz

Consisting of Emcee Feral, Savanna, Rakshit, Explyrix and Sabbii, FBI have an amazing blend of many different skills and talents.. Each of their members brings something different to the table. And what's even better is that the strengths of each member seem to rub off on the rest. Their hard-working, passionate attitude further vindicates claim for this title.

Best Rappers (Regional):

Nottie Dogg

He may not release tracks THAT often, but there is almost a regularity in his releases and even more is the consistency we've come to hear and expect from him. One of the best punjabi rappers around, full stop.

Crack

Seem to come out of nowhere in the D.E.S.I. Mixtape and since then has had collaborations with different rappers in Insignia and has been improving his already strong flow delivery and swag, with constantly commendable lyrics..

Sikander

Started off as 'NewGame'.. Seemed horribly wannabe and a big poser. Slowly though shed his name, his image and then he was partaking in a New Game. One of the best punjabi rappers here now, in my opinion. His flow delivery and swag are very good. But what I think gives him an edge despite maybe not being STAND-OUT at flow or swag is his delivery.. He's one punjabi rappers who doesn't seem to have a Bohemia-esque flow and that I really appreciate. Can work on lyrics though.

Beef Of The Year:

MWA vs. Brassic Bhai ( or Battle Shelter vs. Insignia)

The plain reason I pick this over the FBI vs. Brain Sickness beef is the rap content. There was hardly any BS(no pun intended) and most of it was based on rap. Both sides had some amazing diss tracks, either flow-wise, or lyrically. 'Cocksuckers' by Brassic was one of the best disses I've heard lyrically.. And I think this previously recurring beef brought out the best in him. And the skit was of almost legendary proportions. With MWA, though it seemed almost half-hearted and without much effort.. Almost like they had to respond more than they wanted to, their diss against Brassic and a few other Insignians - 'With Love' was absolutely amazing in almost all aspects.. Other than lyrics though, with Brassic clearly outshining them in that aspect. This one probably ended even, in my opinion and that's another reason this was an amazing beef. Other than the 2 Main Event diss tracks, there were many other off-shoot disses, beefs, text battles, etc. Now though, things are cool.. And I'm a huge fan of MWA as well as Brassic Bhai!

To Look Out For in 2o1o:

Undefined Power

Despite some bangas this year, as well as some bomb beats produced by him, I feel we've only seen the tip of this iceberg.

Hustler

He's developing well and keeps adding new aspects to his skills. Came very close to clinching the Multies tournament recently, an evidence of his improvement in one part which seemed lacking earlier.

Arijit

Seems to blend old-school and new school very well with his style, and is still only new to rapping. His tracks yell out "POTENTIAL!" to me!

This was my fourth title I think. King Of Insignia, Nihilist Noob, Killer Flipper and this one now. I think I'm pretty much done with text battling anyway now.

This win was slightly bitter as well though.. The level of satisfaction just wasn't there.. Sarosh, Brassic Bhai, InfinitZ, HOD, Xtreme Xtasy.. None of them competed in the tourney so.. I don't know.. Just doesn't feel that big a deal.. No hates to the other competitors and Insignians though obviously!

But then again, I was terribly rusty throughout and it was nice to win despite that!

So I guess all is well that ends well..
